SheepMowers was begun after years of Kelsi driving around and saying “wow, that yard could use some sheep” generally out loud to herself or anyone in the car. Eventually it occurred to her to just offer to bring her sheep to those yards! However, it wasn’t as easy as she thought. The trailer she used to occasionally transport sheep was not “sheep approved” for frequent trips, so taking the leap to get a truck and trailer took a bit of time and investment.
While Kelsi is the shepherd, the real employees are the sheep! They are avid eaters who make it their life’s work to find tasty green things to consume. They spend most of their time eating or digesting, and they are amazing at their job!
Sheep
Our flock had its beginnings in 2017 when we acquired our first sheep, Skipper Red Rocket. Skipper was a reddish-brown ewe who lived in a larger flock of sheep so she had friends (including her sister), but for several years she only birthed males. It took awhile for our flock to grow! In 2020, Skipper had twins and finally one was a female! Solstråle (Sol) is the oldest ewe in our flock currently, since Skipper left us a few years back. Sol is an amazing mother. She gives birth to twins regularly and most of her lambs are also white, or mostly white. Sol can be standoffish with humans but will sometimes deign to nibble a treat when offered.
In 2021, Skipper gave birth to triplets, including a brown ewe named Greta. While Sol is not really interested in humans too often, Greta is generally friendly and will often come when called by Kelsi. Unfortunately in 2024, she got very sick after having triplets and while she recovered, she lost one of her two udders. Because of this, she is no longer bred. Since she is so easy to work with we keep her in the flock to help with flock management; she is a great forager and has taught many younger lambs what is good to eat and what to stay away from.
Greta has a single lamb in 2022, whom we named Sassafras (Sassy). Sassy lives up to her name as she is curious and loves to explore. She is also the friendliest sheep in the flock. She usually comes when called and is usually the first sheep to come looking for pets from humans. Sassy is white with brown freckles all over her and wears a bell around her neck because she is the sheep most likely to stick with the others in the flock, often because they’re following her; she is the first to explore new areas. Sheep are often fairly quiet when they’re altogether and a bell helps the humans figure out where they’re grazing when they have access to larger areas.
In 2022, Sol gave birth to Aurora. Like Sol, Aurora isn’t very interested in humans unless they have very tasty treats. Aurora is white with large brown spots all over her and she wears an orange collar, when she keep it on.
In 2024, both Aurora and Sassy gave birth to ewes. Aurora’s lamb, Rosalee is also spotted, though her spots are smaller than Aurora’s, and larger than Sassy’s. Sassy lambed Aster, who is more of a milky tea color with splotches of tan and a freckly nose and legs. Both ewes have temperaments similar to their mothers, though Rosalee is becoming more friendly as she gets older. Rosalee wears a pink collar and Aster had purple.
In 2025 we decided to see of the sheep could be bred for Fall lambing. Unfortunately only Sassy successfully become pregnant and in October 2025 she birthed twin lambs, Marigold and Zeus. Marigold is the youngest adult ewe in our flock. She, like Aster, is a milky tea color but she has brown splotches on her neck and chest. She wears a yellow collar. She is very curious and currently tends to be the sheep that lets us know when there’s an issue with a fence. She is usually found hanging out either with Sassy or Greta, or leading the lambs on adventures.
